Before you have those, melee primary isn't very viable. You're totally right that you need specific rings and such to effectively melee though. For those that don't, you're basically unkillable. Obviously not all bosses, some of them fly after all. I face tank bosses though, just need to use the thorns armor mod. You can go for more crit type DPS equipment as well, but you can't miss a dodge or you're dead doing it that way and the damage increase doesn't seem worth it. The key to doing melee in this game is building mostly for healing and using melee health siphon abilities. Yeah, most of the bosses are really strong, you have really to try hard to play just melee against them, and if you want just win, it's not worth the effort. You can make a melee build, but not early in the game (atlleast I didn't try do that with a new char) and just for fun. You have to unlock different traits and level them to 20, then get accesories, weapons and armors that help you. Today I made a melee build playing on nightmare mode. You get a lot of damage but if you use something that heal you everytime you deal damage you stay alive. I have to say that I'm having fun tho, it's a different playstile (not the best one ofc).
