It’ll be available soon on a strap for a price of $8,200. The new Chronomaster Revival Shadow appears to be joining other regular production models, rather than being introduced as a limited edition. The Chronomaster Revival Shadow reimagines what could have been, rather than directly reproducing a historical Zenith timepiece. Unlike a vintage watch, the movement is visible through an exhibition case back. The modern version in the Chronomaster Revival is the in-house El Primero 400, beating at its characteristic 5Hz and offering 50 hours of power reserve. The A384 is notable because it was one of the first watches to house the now-iconic El Primero automatic chronograph movement, introduced in 1969 along with other notable horological developments. Further notable is that the case is in lightweight, microblasted titanium. As a big fan of the date complication ( and enchanted by the classic A384 dial with date), I was not really disturbed by its missing. The Chronomaster Revival Shadow isn’t a recreation of that prototype, but it applies the blacked-out concept and other design cues to the historically accurate 37mm case of the A384. This is the most contemporary-feeling yet of the Chronomaster Revival series, and this time Zenith takes inspiration from a prototype dating to 1970 - interestingly, two years before the first black-coated watch was introduced. The latest one is rendered in blacked-out titanium and ominously called the “Shadow” - and it looks like a hit. Each has borrowed from vintage models (and even a Japanese cartoon) to create something modern and novel to great effect.

The Chronomaster Revival was introduced in 2019 as a one-to-one remake of the original A384 watch from 1969, but other iterations since then have sometimes taken a more creative approach. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.
